Organizational Change

The ideas which were covered in class about organizational change can be related to work a lot so I would like to share my experience.

My company was recently bought by Google and most of us were put on the transition plan. A lot of people took this change very negative and are demotivated. They come to work just to enjoy the free lunch and have no interest in the Google's transition activities.

I accepted the change as a positive thing as it gave me a chance to work with one of the most qualified people at Google. Just because I had the willingness and the positive attitude as Prof. mentioned in class, I was put as the main lead in the transition and now everybody at Google's corporate finance team knows me.

Although my last day is in October but I am really hopeful that they will notice my hard work and I will be offered a full time position. Atleast I have reached the first step..which is being noticed and talked about. Let's hope for the best for future...

Blog Clogg!

I think the blog was a great idea as it helped us learn much more about each other personally as well as how other people think. Most of us are so comfortable with where we sit that we did not want to go and interact with other people.

Blog was a good way of communication of interacting with other students in class. I think it was also a way to share some of our experiences which we do not feel comfortable with talking about in the class.

The best part was that all the blog assignments were related to what we did so it was a feedback and a recap of what our feelings and experiences were of what we learnt in class. Professor's blog was very interesting too and it kept us informed and interested in the subject.

The only thing which I feel is that I was unsure if we finish all our assignments in time, do we get the full points? Basically, I was unsure about the expectation of course content or work we needed to put on the blog.

But like everything else, I would like to thank the professor for giving us an extra skill or tool which helped us in our overall management growth. I will continue to update the blog and use it as a tool to my fullest benefit. A lot of co-workers and my freinds have been waiting for the semester to be over so that they can visit my blog!!

Motivating factors for young managers

All of us get motivated by different things. The Hierarchy of Needs theory by Maslow stays valid for understanding people’s motivation and personal development. Nowadays Maslow's ideas stated in the Hierarchy of Needs about the responsibility of employers to give workplace that makes it possible for employees to perform their potential are very appropriate. Unlike the normal perception that the money is the most important motivating factor, a survey of young managers showed the following results:

Top 10 Brainstorming techniques

1. Substitute someone else's perspective for yours. How would a teacher, lawyer, actor, artist, or accountant approach your idea or subject? Don't know? Ask them!
2. Look at your idea through the eyes of a critic.
3. Connect your idea to other worlds or fields.4. Magnify your idea. What can you do to enlarge, expedite, extend, strengthen, exaggerate, dramatize, or improve your idea?
5. Simplify your idea. Can you condense, trim down, compact, minimize, or narrow your idea?
6. Change your idea. Modify the name, color, sound, shape, form, function, smell, taste, and properties of your idea.
7. Make your idea meet the needs and wants of the masses.
8. Add more value. What will add more value? Add extra features, durability, safety, thickness, accuracy, guarantees, uses, and freebies.
9. Examine what others have done.
10. Flip a coin. When you cannot make a decision, flip a coin.

Bad Presentations

Leaders of tomorrow

Ohh! I wonder out of all the classes
Which subject inspired the masses?
Was it Accounting, Statistics?
Or was it Management ethics?

So many topics
So many things to learn
But each one
Full of fun

Are we only leaders at workplace?
Or management can be used in every space?

From business culture to communication
From manager’s tasks to leaders inspiration
From Pizza Parlor’s planning
To Jello’s brainstorming

Who knew everytime
We were getting better at managing.

From Stefan’s communication style
To our personal profile
Management is important every step of our life.

We learnt time management skills
The survival activity gave us chills
Joey’s conflict and compromise
Made each one of us wise

I am not sure about the rest
But Professor Kurpis is the best
He has given us the direction
Which we all have to follow
And become leaders of the generation

All the best!!

How to hire top performers

DISC Profile- D High I

This was a very interesting test. After answering the 28 questions, I came out as a D high I personality. The professor mentioned that this is the most effective managerial personality type.

I was very happy and content to hear that. I beleive that the test did accurately predicted my management style. I have strong ambitions in life, I am sometimes forceful, direct and like a challenge. But I do not force my opinions on others. Some of the famous D style people are Martha Stewart and Donald trump. That is why I asked the professor and he mentioned that as I am a high I personality as well, I strongly stand by my beliefs but at the same time am able to influence people. I am persuasive, confident, sociable, convincing, and emotional. I always feel the need to communicate with people. Some of the famous I type people are Oprah and Bill Clinton.

I am very happy with my management style and would not want to change it. I think understanding what is other person's management style really helps a person understand how to interact with others. For example:If we knew that our direct reports are a C type, we would adapt our communication style so that we give them the tasks as organized and precise as possible. This way they ould like to think analytically and reach best solutions.

This test would also help in all interactions whether it is personal or social. Knowing other person's traits would help us react and approach people in their communiaction styles.

VISION

The goals that I have in my future are:

Business:

1) I would like to become a top level executive in a firm: I work as an accounting manager in my company but my company has been aquired by another firm. This has happened to me twice and I would like to be in a position where I am not worried for bread and butter for my family.
2) Real estate residual income: I would like to buy atleast 2 properties which will fetch me residual income so that I can capitalize on my assets.
3) Consulting Business: I would like to be my own boss at one point and manage my time and resources myself. Having 3 or more big clients will help me maintain work life balance as well as make good money.

Personal:

1) Top education from an accredited university.
2) CPA, CMA and CTP certifications.
3) Giving top education to my kids and making them great professionals.
4) Paying my house loan 100%

Steps taken to achieve these goals:

1) I am going to school to finish my undergraduate from this country even though I have an undergraduate from my school so that I can get CPA, CMA and CTP certified.
2) I am going to try to get admission in the wharton MBA program so that I can rise to a top exceutive within a firm. I am also working extremely hard as I am managing 2 kids, husband, full time job, full time school at the same time. Even after doing multiple things, my GPA is 3.81 and am hoping to graduate with 3.85(this is my last semester) so that I can apply for Wharton.
3) I am on top of my kids education and they are doing great in school.
4) I have already managed to get few small clients so that this would give me a base for my future consulting career.

Steps in the Planning Process

GOLeaders said...
Steps in The Planning Process:We did a pretty good job at planning our project. We took the following steps:
a) Defining goals and objectives: We divided our group into specific tasks and assigned one task to each member. We also outlined the chronological order of doing things. For example: One would get the scissors, two people will make triangles, one person will hold the egg and one person will put them together. We even identified the time it will take for each person and the total combined time for the group.
b) Resources: We saw who was the shortest and so that person can drop the egg..who is not clumsy so they can hold the egg..who is better at designing and putting the design together and utilized our resources well so we were finished way before the time finished.
c) Alternative Scenarios: We thought that if the triangle idea does not work, we should use the circular idea and drew both the designs to be implemented.
d) Allocating Resources: Each person was given a specific task to do based on his area of expertise.
e) The plan was implemented successfully. The whole issue why our plan failed was because one member started pasting the left over tape on several places so we had to drop pur egg twice as it needed to be 50% visible. If I have to do this all over again, I would make sure as a manager that every person abides by the plan. But the whole experience was very entertaining and learning adventure.

The Biggest Management Issue

GOLeaders said...
The biggest management issue which I am facing is with my Boss who is taking credit for all the work which I do. He makes me do all the research and reports and presents them as his own in front of the CFO. I hope to learn a good solution for this issue as we progress through the semester

Decision Making

We were given an assignment by the professor to discuss in the class different ways by which we would like to negotiate our grade. The class had to come up with decisions and our resources were getting limited as the professor disclosed more information as the activity progressed.

I used collaboration and accomodation combined as I feel the best way to achieve results is by working in the groiup for the group rather than working against each other. We discussed different options and I was open to listening to others as sometimes an idea can come during brainstorming which can be beneficial to me personally in the long run.

I also wanted to think of us as a group as a whole and be the team player. I think the result was good as we got extra credit and we can drop the lowest grade but if I had to do this all over again, I would still adopt the same technique as I feel it is very effective when it comes to making a decision in a team.
